Are Oral Pills Effective Against Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)?

Updated: Aug 15

We have been asked frequently about the effectiveness of oral GS pill by cat's owners who do not wish to perform daily injections on their cats. Generally, we don't recommend using oral form of GS-441524 during the early phase of treatment for one simple reason... ABSORPTION.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis viruses attack digestive organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver and kidneys. These damaged organs have reduced ability to digest and absorb chemicals delivered orally into the body. While oral pills are easier to administer than injections on a daily basis, it is difficult if not altogether impossible to know exactly how much GS-441524 is absorbed by the body into the blood stream. Insufficient dosage over an extended period often lead to incomplete healing and high relapse rate at some point in the future.

Oral pills of GS-441524 can be used to treat FIP in the following situations:

  • When your cat's digestive organs are functioning normally.

  • When blood tests show that GS injections have brought viral infection under control and the body is recovering well.

  • When used as preventive measure for cats that are suspected of FIP infection by the doctor.

  • When used after the conclusion of the treatment as a periodic immunity booster to avoid relapse.

The most effective method of delivering GS-441524 to your cat's bloodstream is via direct subcutaneous injections. There is no better way.
